Should I pursue this job offer? Will it be wrong to leave
the company when the company has done so much for me? Should I wait till the
appraisal gets over? Does any of these thoughts ring a bell to you?
These are some of the thoughts that linger in your mind when
you see a job offer from your dream company. So, when is the right time to move
on? Here are my two cents on this subject.
Culture is really icky
In the name of passion and competition, all the demonic
qualities of human beings are on full display. Your opinion is put down with
full disdain. Insecurity is in the air.
People snap at each other at the drop of a hat. When you smile or laugh at some
joke, people look at you and give you a nasty look. When you are in look for
help, people turn a cold shoulder at you. O boy, you are at a wrong WRONG palace!!
Prioritize your happiness over any company, career and
people. Always believe you deserve all the happiness and respect in this world.
You might have committed the biggest blunder, but never EVER let anyone ever
run over you. The person who might be
yelling at you, might have committed much bigger blunder. He/she must have
forgotten it or is just plainly dumb.
Remember, you are here to contribute, learn and progress and
not to take anyone’s SHIT!!
A self-centered boss
A bad boss has the ability to destroy your personal life.
You may have wanted to hear – he can destroy your office life. No!! You heard
it right, I am talking about your family and friends here. That pent up anger,
dejection and anxiety needs to find a way out of your system. Obviously, it cannot be pointed towards your
boss, which should be ideal. Next in line, come people who are close to us.
They keep wondering why this guy has gone cuckoo. Little do they know, he is
suffering from a villainous boss?
For such bosses, the world revolves around themselves. He is
too caught up about his own promotions and appeasements that he cares two hoots
for your career.
Remember, a bad boss is like a bad marriage, the more you
try to save it, the deeper you dig yourself in deep shit.
Hitting a plateau
They say that any muscle including the brain if not used or
challenged, loses it sheen. It works on “Use it or Lose it” principle. The same
job profile with no real challenges or firefighting can be extremely dangerous
not only for your thinking capabilities but also for your overall career. Sometimes
bosses can give you false promises of an ideal project that will take you
places. It can also be a leadership role that you have been waiting for long. These
are just delaying inevitable.
I generally believe, that a job, appraisal or company cannot
make or break you. Just keeping working hard on your knowledge and take the
plunge.
Though there might be many more reasons to move on like
sexual harassment, better pay package, relocating, the above reasons are
irrefutable for a job change.
In a nutshell, job is just a part of your life, when it
becomes your life, there is something terribly wrong.
